The Tragic Story of the Najera Family and Their Fight for Justice

In February 2023, tragedy struck the Najera family in San Antonio. Ramon Najera lost his life trying to save his beloved wife, Janie, from a vicious attack by two 65-pound Pitbulls. The incident left Janie with severe injuries that required specialized care at Brooke Army Medical Center.

This wasn’t the first time these dogs had attacked someone, leading the Najera family to file a federal lawsuit against the City of San Antonio and City Attorney Andy Segovia for their negligence in preventing this preventable tragedy. The lawsuit, filed by family attorney Marion Reilly, seeks justice for the devastating loss suffered by the Najera family.

The lawsuit alleges that the City of San Antonio had previous knowledge of these dangerous dogs’ behavior and failed to take appropriate action to protect its citizens. Despite multiple incidents involving the dogs prior to the fatal attack on Feb. 24, 2023, the city’s Animal Care Services released the dogs back to their owners, ultimately resulting in the death of Ramon Najera.

The dogs’ owners, Christian Moreno and Abilene Schnieder, were arrested and charged with a dangerous dog attack resulting in death and injury to the elderly. As the trial proceeds, it has been revealed that complaints and police interventions related to these dogs were alarmingly frequent, highlighting a pattern of negligence on the part of city authorities.

While no amount of legal action can bring back Ramon Najera, his family hopes that their lawsuit will prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future. By holding the city accountable for their inaction, they aim to ensure that all members of the community are equally protected.

The responsibility for the actions of pets lies with the pets’ owners, and in this case, the owners have been found criminally liable. The City has not yet been served with the suit. The City will investigate the claims and address them in the litigation if needed.

Through their legal battle, the Najera family hopes to raise awareness about the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for stricter regulations to prevent such devastating incidents from occurring again. Janie Najera’s story and her quest for justice will be featured in an exclusive interview with KSAT’s Steve Spriester on Tuesday at 10 p.m. on the Nightbeat.

Join us in supporting the Najera family as they fight for justice and work to prevent future tragedies in our communities.
