Nonprofit rents pools to help special needs young adults cool down

SAN ANTONIO – As students in the San Antonio area gear up for another school year, the summer heat is still in full swing. While public pools may have adjusted their hours, swimming remains a popular choice to beat the heat and have fun.

For SA Life Academy, a private pool offers more than just a way to cool off. The academy, which caters to adults with special needs and serves over 130 families in the area, provides a safe and relaxing environment for socializing and having fun without the crowds of a public pool.

Abby Inzurriaga, assistant program director and lead teacher at SA Life Academy, emphasized the importance of private pool access for their group. “Being able to come to a pool helps with motor skills and sensory experiences. But more importantly, it allows our group to kick back, relax, and enjoy time with friends,” she said.

By utilizing resources like Swimply, which offers private pool rentals, SA Life Academy can enrich the lives of those in their care. The Swimply app and website simplify the process of accessing private pools, making it easier for groups to enjoy social activities together.

19-year-old Ryan Higgins shared his favorite part of swimming with friends, “We do water gun shooting, and I like the inner tube with some balls right there.”

Inzurriaga highlighted the academy’s motto, “to do life together,” emphasizing the importance of integrating adults with special needs into the community through shared experiences like swimming. “By getting our adults out into the community, we’re also showing the community them as well as them the community,” she said.
