Millions in the dark as Helene causes prolonged flooding

Hurricane Helene Leaves Millions Without Power and Devastation in Its Wake

The remnants of Hurricane Helene dissipated Saturday but millions remain without power across the Southeast. Record-breaking river flooding is ongoing, and at least 44 deaths have been reported across five states.

Helene made landfall as a Category 4 storm, causing destruction in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, and Tennessee. Tropical Storm John hit Mexico’s Pacific coast, leading to widespread flooding in Acapulco.

Local communities like Davis Islands in Tampa are now grappling with the aftermath of unprecedented storm surge. Businesses and homes were flooded, but residents are thankful that no lives were lost.

Vice President Kamala Harris urged residents to follow local officials’ guidance for their safety. In Tennessee, a potential dam failure near the North Carolina border sparked evacuation concerns, but officials confirmed no catastrophic failure was imminent.

One of the most dramatic rescues occurred in a flooded Tennessee hospital, where patients and staff were airlifted from the roof as waters rose rapidly. After hours of effort, everyone was safely evacuated.

The impact of Hurricane Helene serves as a stark reminder of nature’s power and the importance of heeding evacuation warnings and safety precautions during such disasters.
