GONZALES, Texas – Shockwaves were sent through the Gonzales community when it was revealed that a longtime administrator within the Gonzales Independent School District was under investigation for allegedly misusing district resources for personal gain. Wanda Fryer, a prominent figure within the school district, was accused of using district resources to print flyers in support of a school board candidate, according to state records obtained by KSAT Investigates.
The investigation into Fryer’s actions was initiated by the Texas Attorney General’s Law Enforcement Division in response to a request from the Gonzales ISD Police Department. The case has since been forwarded to the Gonzales County Attorney’s Office as a misdemeanor offense, as confirmed by Gonzales County Attorney Paul Watkins in a statement to KSAT.
While the details of the case remain confidential, the allegation against Fryer is categorized under the Texas Elections Code as the unlawful use of public funds for political advertising, according to the AG records.
District Silent on Fryer’s Employment Status
Despite the controversy surrounding Fryer, the Gonzales ISD remains tight-lipped about her employment status. An earlier Facebook post from July 2022 announced Fryer’s promotion to director of secondary education, but since then, district officials have not provided any updates on her current status.
Fryer’s personnel file, released in response to a public records request from KSAT, reveals her extensive 20-year tenure in various administrative positions within the district. However, the district has not responded to inquiries about whether she is still employed.
