WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden will deliver the keynote address Monday night at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. This symbolic handoff to Vice President Kamala Harris will highlight the pressing need to keep Donald Trump out of the White House.
Just four weeks ago, Biden decided not to seek reelection after doubts arose about his ability to defeat the Republican nominee. Now, Biden will make the case for why Harris should succeed him and take on Trump, who he believes poses a significant threat to democracy. Biden will also highlight some of his key accomplishments before passing the baton to Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, for the rest of the week.
Biden’s appearance with Harris in Maryland was met with chants of “Thank you, Joe!” His endorsement of Harris has helped unify the party behind her, avoiding any potential conflicts over the party’s future in Chicago.
Although Biden is no longer the nominee, his influence will still be felt at the convention. Speakers are expected to reference his achievements, including leading the country through the COVID-19 pandemic and passing major legislation on infrastructure, climate, and healthcare.
Harris has built her policy plans on the foundation laid by Biden’s initiatives, emphasizing the importance of continuing his work. The convention will feature references to Biden’s campaign logo and a quote from his Oval Office address where he urged voters to support Harris.
On Monday, the theme will be “Spread the faith,” a familiar Biden slogan. First Lady Jill Biden and other family members will attend the convention to witness Biden’s final speech, marking the end of his 50-year career in Democratic politics.
