SAN ANTONIO – Animal Care Services issued six citations to the owner of three dogs involved in a fight with a San Antonio police K-9 officer, which tragically led to the K-9 being accidentally shot and killed by its handler.
ACS stated that the owner received citations for dog-related offenses, including allowing the dogs to roam off property, damaging private property, and failing to prevent the dogs from biting another animal. The incident occurred on Lands Point Street on Saturday afternoon when three dogs managed to breach a fence and attacked a SAPD K-9 officer. The officer, who was off-duty at the time, attempted to stop the dogs from fighting but had to resort to firing multiple shots to intervene.
Tragically, two of the neighbor’s dogs and the K-9 officer were struck by the gunfire. Despite immediate medical attention, the K-9 officer succumbed to its injuries, while one of the neighbor’s dogs also passed away. The remaining dog is currently receiving care at a veterinary clinic, with its condition uncertain.
Amanda Harris, the neighbor, recounted the harrowing experience of the incident and expressed uncertainty about the well-being of their remaining dog being treated at the clinic. The situation unfolded abruptly, with Harris and her husband reacting to the commotion caused by the attack and subsequent gunfire.
The aftermath of the incident has prompted an ongoing investigation, with the possibility of additional charges or citations being issued based on the findings. The involved officer has been placed on administrative duty, and both SAPD’s Shooting Team and Internal Affairs Unit are conducting thorough investigations to unravel the unfortunate events that transpired.
