Long-Range Missile Fired from Yemen Lands in Central Israel
Early this Sunday, a long-range missile launched from Yemen struck an open area in central Israel, according to the Israeli military.
The missile attack set off air raid sirens across the region, including at Israel’s international airport. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or damages thus far. The military clarified that the explosions heard in the area were the result of interceptors.
Footage aired by Israeli media captured the frantic scene at Ben Gurion International Airport, as passengers scrambled to safety rooms and sought cover on trains. Images also showed what appeared to be debris from the missile or interceptor landing on an escalator at a train station in Modiin.
The Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have been launching drones and missiles towards Israel since the onset of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza. While most of these projectiles have been intercepted over the Red Sea, there have been breaches.
In a previous incident in July, an Iranian-made drone deployed by the Houthis hit Tel Aviv, resulting in casualties. Israel retaliated with a series of air strikes on Houthi-controlled territories in Yemen. The rebels have also targeted commercial ships in the Red Sea, purportedly in solidarity with Palestinians but with no direct link to Israel.
The Gaza conflict, triggered by Hamas’ incursion into southern Israel, has had far-reaching consequences. Iran and its proxies have targeted Israeli and American assets, prompting responses from Israel and its allies. These exchanges have raised concerns about the potential for a broader escalation.
