Xian Zhang Named Music Director of Seattle Symphony
Xian Zhang made history on Thursday as she was appointed as the new music director of the Seattle Symphony, marking the first time a woman conductor will lead a major West Coast orchestra. Her appointment comes after the sudden departure of Thomas Dausgaard earlier this year.
Zhang has signed a five-year contract with the orchestra starting in the 2025-26 season. She will assume the role of music director designate for this season as she transitions into her new position.
Having previously conducted the orchestra at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall on several occasions, including standout performances of pieces like Prokofiev’s “Alexander Nevsky” and Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” Zhang expressed her deep appreciation for the orchestra’s musicality, stating, “It felt in a way musically speaking that we’re really on the same page and speaking the same language.”
Prior to her appointment in Seattle, Zhang served as the music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and garnered acclaim for her Grammy-winning recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Seattle Symphony President Krishna Thiagarajan praised Zhang’s artistry, highlighting her ability to connect with both the orchestra and audiences. He commended her fresh perspectives on classical repertoire and her advocacy for diverse voices in music.
Zhang’s appointment follows the departure of previous music directors Gerard Schwarz and Ludovic Morlot, as well as the challenging exit of Thomas Dausgaard. The orchestra’s board chair, Jon Rosen, acknowledged the significance of finding a director who could foster a positive and collaborative environment.
With a rich musical background that began in China and led her to international acclaim, Zhang’s diverse experiences and artistic vision are sure to bring a new energy to the Seattle Symphony. Her upcoming season is packed with performances across various orchestras, showcasing her versatility and dedication to the craft.
Reflecting on her unexpected appointment, Zhang shared her surprise and excitement, stating, “I was completely not prepared to hear such good news.”
It’s an exciting new chapter for the Seattle Symphony under the leadership of Xian Zhang, marking a historic milestone for both the orchestra and the broader classical music community.
