Barbora Krejcikova Upset at U.S. Open
Defending Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova faced a surprising exit at the U.S. Open on Wednesday, losing to Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-4, 7-5 in the second round.
Krejcikova, seeded No. 8, had a successful summer winning her second Grand Slam singles title but had not played any matches since the Paris Olympics. The Czech player expressed uncertainty about her form leading up to the U.S. Open.
Ruse, on the other hand, navigated her way through the qualifying rounds to secure a spot in the main draw, giving her more playing time on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows. This advantage proved crucial as she made a comeback from a 5-3 deficit in the second set to claim victory over Krejcikova.
“Barbora, she’s such a good player, she’s won so many matches in the last two years and it’s just a dream for me,” said Ruse, a 26-year-old from Romania.
This win marks Ruse’s first appearance in the third round of a Grand Slam, where she will face No. 26 seed Paula Badosa. Badosa defeated American Taylor Townsend 6-3, 7-5 to secure her place in the next round.
Meanwhile, Madison Keys and Elise Mertens also advanced to the third round with comfortable victories in their respective matches.
As the tournament continues, fans are eagerly awaiting matches featuring defending champions Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic.
