SAN ANTONIO – City Council Members Push for Stronger LGBTQ Stance
As the Texas Legislature gears up for its next session in January, some San Antonio city council members are advocating for a more robust position on LGBTQ-related legislation.
Efforts to limit LGBTQ rights often take center stage in Texas politics, with proposed bills targeting transgender individuals and public drag performances.
While the city’s proposed legislative program focuses on issues like local governance and housing affordability, LGBTQ concerns are not explicitly outlined.
During a recent committee meeting, Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez, the city’s first openly gay council member, expressed concerns about the city’s level of support for LGBTQ legislation.
Assistant City Manager Jeff Coyle noted that previous city stances on LGBTQ matters have fallen under the umbrella of upholding the city’s nondiscrimination ordinance.
Councilman Manny Pelaez emphasized the importance of taking a more direct and aggressive approach, despite potential pushback from state lawmakers.
While some council members raised concerns about focusing on LGBTQ issues impacting the city’s lobbying efforts, others advocated for clearer support for the community.
As discussions continue on refining the city’s legislative agenda, the council aims to navigate advocating for LGBTQ rights while respecting state leadership.
