Black Fire in Tonto National Forest

Black Fire in Tonto National Forest

A recent wildfire, named the Black Fire, has broken out in the Tonto National Forest. It is believed to have been caused by lightning and has already burned approximately 8,000 to 10,000 acres near Black Brush Ranch. While it is near Lakeview Estates, Tonto National Monument, and Black Brush Ranch, these areas are not currently threatened by the fire.

The Central West Zone Type 3 Incident Command Team is set to take charge of the firefighting operations on July 14. Crews are actively working to contain the southeast portion of the fire and exploring options for suppression operations on the northwest side of Road 49.

Residents in the vicinity are advised to sign up for the County Emergency Notification System to receive timely evacuation alerts. The Tonto Basin Ranger Station has been closed until further notice due to the fire.

Evacuation orders have been issued for various communities, including USFS campgrounds, Revies Mountain School, Black Brush Ranch, and Cross P Ranch. Additional details can be found on official social media posts shared by the Gila County Sheriff’s Office and Gila County Emergency Management.

Stay Prepared with a Wildfire Go-Kit

Residents in wildfire-prone areas are urged to assemble an emergency supplies kit for evacuation purposes. The kit should include essentials like water, ready-to-eat food, first-aid supplies, medications, and vital documents stored in a waterproof container. Additional items recommended by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) can also be included to ensure preparedness.

You can access the complete NFPA checklist of supplies here.
