Vikings rookie QB J.J. McCarthy out for season after knee surgery for torn meniscus

In a surprising turn of events, Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy will be sidelined for the season due to a knee injury that required surgery. The former Michigan standout had been expected to back up starter Sam Darnold but will now miss out on the opportunity due to a torn meniscus suffered during his preseason debut against Las Vegas.

Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell broke the news about McCarthy’s injury as the team prepared for joint practices with the Browns. Despite the setback, O’Connell expressed optimism about McCarthy’s future, praising his performance during training camp leading up to the injury.

McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the NFL draft, showed promise in his preseason game, throwing for 188 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Unfortunately, his injury will keep him off the field for the rest of the season.

In McCarthy’s absence, Nick Mullens will step in as the Vikings’ backup quarterback, ready to take on the role at a moment’s notice. O’Connell expressed confidence in Mullens’ ability to provide support to the team in McCarthy’s absence.

While it’s disappointing news for McCarthy and the Vikings, the team is focused on moving forward and preparing for the season ahead. With faith in their backup quarterback and a positive outlook for McCarthy’s recovery, the Vikings are ready to face whatever challenges come their way.
