Raphael Varane, formerly of France and Real Madrid, has announced his retirement, marking the end of a successful career that included a World Cup title and numerous club trophies.
Varane, who recently joined Serie A club Como, was unfortunately sidelined by a knee injury during his brief stint with the team, following an Italian Cup match against Sampdoria.
In an emotional Instagram post, Varane reflected on his career, stating, “In my career I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfillment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.”
During his time with France, Varane was a standout defender in their 2018 World Cup victory. He also achieved success with Real Madrid, winning four Champions League titles and three Spanish league trophies.
Despite a brief spell with Manchester United, Varane’s career was hampered by injuries, limiting his appearances for the Premier League club.
Varane expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he had throughout his career, starting from his early days at Lens to his time with Madrid and Manchester United. He emphasized his love for the game and his pride in his achievements.
Having already retired from France’s national team, Varane will now transition into a new role at Como, although he did not reveal specific details about his future involvement with the club.
Como recently celebrated a historic victory in Serie A under the leadership of coach Cesc Fabregas, securing their first win in over two decades.
