The Uvalde Police Department Takes Steps to Enhance Active Shooter Training
UVALDE, Texas – The Uvalde Police Department is dedicated to ensuring the safety of its community. Recently, the department conducted a joint active shooter training session with 10 neighboring law enforcement agencies.
This three-day training program is part of the department’s Guardian initiative, which aims to rebuild trust, restore credibility, and enhance community relations following the tragic Robb Elementary shooting on May 24, 2022.
Participating agencies received valuable “Active Shooter Incident Management Training,” a FEMA-funded course offered only three times per year in each state.
According to Texas A&M Engineer Extension Services Instructor Ari Jimenez, the training emphasizes the importance of swift action in active shooter situations. Officers are trained to enter the scene quickly as a delay can result in more casualties.
Communication is key during such critical incidents, as emphasized by Jimenez. Proper coordination among responding officers helps prevent friendly fire incidents and ensures a cohesive response to the threat.
Assistant Chief Mike Davis highlighted the value of virtual training, allowing agencies to simulate various scenarios efficiently. The department plans to conduct live drills in the future to further enhance their preparedness.
Live training sessions have already been conducted at Uvalde schools, demonstrating the proactive approach taken by the police department to safeguard the community.
