USPS shifts mailbox maintenance to select neighborhoods in San Antonio

Welcome to our blog, where we bring you the latest news and updates from around San Antonio. Today, we’re talking about the ongoing issues with cluster mailboxes in at least 16 neighborhoods in the area.

Residents like Kermit Bryant from the Westover Elms neighborhood are frustrated with the broken mailboxes in their area. He estimated that at least $30,000 or more has been spent on mailbox repairs in his community alone.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has stated that the responsibility for the purchase, installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of mailboxes falls on the customer or their respective homeowners association (HOA). This has left residents questioning why they are being asked to foot the bill for what they believe is USPS property.

Some neighborhoods, like Westover Elms, have been proactive in paying for mailbox repairs, while others, like Northwest Crossing, have refused, causing residents to make inconvenient trips to the post office to collect their mail.

Congressman Joaquin Castro and four colleagues have stepped in, writing to the USPS urging them to take action and work with the affected neighborhoods to install new and reliable cluster boxes. They emphasized that residents, especially seniors and people with disabilities, should not have to bear the cost of maintaining these mailboxes.

As the USPS responds to the congress members’ letter, residents are hopeful that a solution will be found to address the ongoing mailbox issues in these 16 San Antonio neighborhoods.
