Breaking News: U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Extremist Settlers in the West Bank
In a significant move, the U.S. government announced sanctions on Hilltop Youth, a group of extremist settlers in the Israeli-occupied West Bank who have been involved in attacking Palestinians and their property.
Additionally, diplomatic sanctions were placed on two individuals – Eitan Yardeni and Avichai Suissa – for their roles in violence targeting civilians in the West Bank. Yardeni is linked to violent activities, while Suissa leads Hashomer Yosh, a group known for recruiting young volunteers to settler farms in the area.
The imposition of sanctions comes amidst a surge in violence against Palestinians in the West Bank following recent terrorist attacks. Reports indicate harassment, intimidation, and restriction of movement directed towards Palestinians by settlers.
Hilltop Youth, known for carrying out killings and mass arson, has been linked to “price tag” attacks on Palestinian villages as retaliation for hindering settlement construction efforts.
Despite the sanctions, some settlers believe the impact on their finances will be minimal. Hilltop Youth has previously faced sanctions from the EU and UK.
Critics have pointed out that the Biden administration has been relatively restrained in sanctioning Israeli extremists. However, U.S. authorities emphasize the importance of holding accountable those who perpetuate violence in the region.
The Treasury Department and State Department officials reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability in the West Bank through targeted sanctions.
