University of the Incarnate Word Football Program Prepares for Season Opener
As the countdown to the regular season kickoff for the University of the Incarnate Word continues, the football program recently held its annual media day to update fans on the team’s progress.
Head Coach Clint Killough and key staff members, including Offensive Coordinator Conner McQueen and Defensive Coordinator Jim Gush, along with several offensive and defensive players, were in attendance.
One notable absence at the event was the quarterback position. The competition between last year’s starter Zach Calzada and Richard Torres from Southside High School remains undecided, as Coach Killough emphasized the need for further discussions before making a final decision.
During the player interviews, the team reflected on the disappointment of last season’s 9-2 record not leading to a playoff berth. Seniors like Mason Chambers shared their motivation to improve and strive for success this season.
Junior running back Dekalon Taylor expressed how the team’s offseason focus has been fueled by the desire to avenge their playoff snub and ensure a stronger performance this year.
Fans can look forward to the Cardinals’ first game on August 31 against Northern Colorado, where the team will aim to kick off the season with a statement victory.
