U.S. election bets halted by appeals court ruling in a few hours

Welcome to the Future of Election Betting

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Excitement was in the air as legal betting on the outcome of U.S. Congressional elections kicked off, only to be swiftly halted by a federal appeals court just hours later.

The Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit made a surprising move Thursday night, issuing an order to temporarily freeze the betting process until further consideration. The timeline for their decision remains uncertain.

This decision came shortly after a federal judge gave the green light for the first-ever legal bets on American election outcomes to take place. New York startup company Kalshi was granted permission by U.S. District Court Judge Jia Cobb to offer bets on which party would control the House and Senate after November’s elections.

Kalshi wasted no time in launching their markets and accepting bets, or as they call them, “contracts.” But the celebration was short-lived, as the Thursday night order halted any future bets on election outcomes, leaving the fate of existing bets up in the air.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s appeal of Cobb’s ruling raised concerns about potential manipulation of elections for financial gain, leading to the court’s decision to pause the betting activity. Prices on Kalshi’s predictive contracts fluctuated throughout the brief period they were live, offering intriguing odds for bettors.

While the elections category was conspicuously absent from the company’s website the following day, the future of election betting remains uncertain. Will we see a resurgence of this controversial form of wagering, or is it destined to remain a footnote in the annals of betting history?

For now, we can only speculate on what the next chapter will bring in the world of election betting. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story!
