Typhoon with heavy rain moving towards Taiwan, 4,000 evacuate

As a typhoon with strong winds and heavy rainfall approaches Taiwan, thousands of people have been evacuated from vulnerable areas. The coastal Taitung County has already received 93 centimeters of rain, with the major port city of Kaohsiung experiencing 29 centimeters ahead of Typhoon Krathon.

The typhoon, with sustained winds of 173 kph and gusts up to 209 kph, is forecasted to make landfall on Taiwan’s west coast early Thursday. This is unusual as typhoons typically affect the mountainous eastern side of the island.

Precautionary measures have been taken across the island, including the closure of schools, government offices, and cancellation of domestic flights. Evacuation efforts are in place in various regions, with over 3,000 people evacuated from Hualien County and hundreds more from other areas.

Despite weakening after landfall, the typhoon’s impact is still significant. Residents are advised to stay away from flood-prone areas to avoid potential dangers. Military personnel are on standby for rescue operations as needed.

The city of Kaohsiung is taking necessary precautions, with most establishments closed and residents stocking up on essentials. Memories of past typhoons serve as a reminder of the potential risks and the importance of preparedness.

While the impact of Typhoon Krathon unfolds, the region remains vigilant and ready to respond to any challenges it may bring.

The recent devastation in the northern Philippines serves as a reminder of the destructive power of typhoons and the importance of early preparation and response.
