NEW YORK – A much-anticipated film that had struggled to gain attention post its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, “The Apprentice,” featuring Sebastian Stan as a young Donald Trump, now has a distributor gearing up for a pre-election release in November.
Briarcliff Entertainment is set to release the movie on Oct. 11 in theaters across the U.S. and Canada.
Director Ali Abbasi, a Danish Iranian filmmaker, had been keen on getting “The Apprentice” on the big screen before the upcoming election. Following the rejection of the film by major studios and distributors, Abbasi expressed his frustration about the lack of support for the film in the U.S.
Despite facing legal threats and challenges, “The Apprentice” sheds light on Trump’s journey in New York real estate under the mentorship of Roy Cohn (played by Jeremy Strong). The film delves into controversial topics, including a depiction of Trump’s ex-wife, Ivana Trump disclosing a past incident.
Abbasi’s hope for engaging with Trump to discuss the movie’s context remains open, showing a willingness to bridge any miscommunications.
Briarcliff Entertainment, known for its diverse film releases, is led by industry veteran Tom Ortenberg, with a track record of successful projects. The distributor’s decision to back “The Apprentice” reflects their commitment to showcasing impactful stories.
