Trump visits deep-red Wisconsin county to discuss economy

Welcome to the Economical Battle in Wisconsin

MOSINEE, Wis. – Former President Donald Trump is set to make his way to Wisconsin on Saturday for a rally that will heavily emphasize the economy, marking his first visit to this crucial battleground state’s deep-red, predominantly rural region.

Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have been engaged in discussions about their economic plans leading up to the upcoming Tuesday’s presidential debate, where their conflicting proposals are anticipated to take the spotlight.

Trump stated on Thursday his commitment to leading what he referred to as a “national economic renaissance” by implementing increased tariffs, reducing regulations to stimulate energy production, cutting government spending significantly, and lowering corporate taxes for U.S.-based companies.

Harris, on the other hand, advocated for raising corporate tax rates, exempting tips and Social Security income from taxes, and enhancing tax incentives for small businesses to encourage entrepreneurship.

Both Harris and Trump have been frequent visitors to Wisconsin, a state where the outcome of four out of the last six presidential elections has been decided by a margin of less than one percentage point. Recent polls in Wisconsin post the exit of President Joe Biden indicate a tight contest between Harris and Trump.

Democrats regard Wisconsin as a crucial “blue wall” state that they must win. Biden, who visited Wisconsin on Thursday, claimed victory in the state in 2020 by just under 21,000 votes, while Trump won it with a slightly larger margin of nearly 23,000 votes in 2016.

Trump is taking his economic agenda to Mosinee, a central Wisconsin city with approximately 4,500 residents. This city falls within Wisconsin’s predominantly Republican 7th Congressional District, situated in a swing state. Trump won the county where Mosinee is located by 18 percentage points in both 2016 and 2020.

Democrats rely on high turnout in Milwaukee and Madison to counterbalance the Republican stronghold in rural areas like Mosinee and the suburbs of Milwaukee. Trump needs to rally support in places like Mosinee to have a shot at narrowing the Democrats’ lead in urban regions.

The Republicans held their national convention in Milwaukee in July, and Trump has made four previous visits to the state, most recently in the western Wisconsin city of La Crosse.

Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, previously filled the same Milwaukee arena where the Republicans convened for their national convention, during a rally coinciding with the Democratic National Convention just 90 miles away in Chicago. Walz made a return to Milwaukee on Monday, where he addressed a Labor Day rally organized by unions.

Biden visited rural western Wisconsin on Thursday, his first trip to the state since dropping out of the race. During the visit, Biden announced $7.3 billion in investments for 16 cooperatives that will provide electricity to rural areas across 23 states, aimed at reducing the cost of essential internet connections in hard-to-reach regions.
