Tips for staying safe from the sun and UV radiation

San Antonio – The hot summer months in San Antonio bring a mix of activities and experiences for its residents. For flag football enthusiast Julio Sanchez, it marks the beginning of the season.

“We usually start playing outside around 9 a.m. and finish around 1 p.m. It’s the hottest time of the day with the sun shining down on us,” he said. Sanchez stresses the importance of applying sunscreen before hitting the field.

Dr. Alexander Miller, a surgical oncologist at the START Center for Cancer Care, highlights a concerning rise in skin cancer cases among younger individuals.

“We see more cases of skin cancer in people in their 20s and 30s than ever before. Protecting your skin is crucial,” he emphasized, attributing the increase to changing attitudes towards sunscreen and higher UV radiation exposure.

Dr. Miller advises wearing hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing when spending extended time outdoors. He recommends using sunscreen with at least 50 SPF and reapplying it every few hours for optimal protection.
