Understanding West Nile Virus: What You Need to Know

In the latest update from Bexar County officials, another mosquito has been found to test positive for the West Nile virus. This marks the third case in the county for the year 2024, with the infected mosquito discovered near Highway 90 and Cagnon Road.

Previous cases were reported near a drainage channel close to Glen Fair Drive and another near Highway 90 and Kriewald Road, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures.

While authorities are stepping up mosquito abatement efforts in the affected areas and providing guidance to residents, our team at KSAT 12 News delved deeper into the virus by speaking with a local epidemiologist.

UT-Health Chief Epidemiologist Jason Bowling shed light on the infection and its prevalence in Texas, emphasizing the importance of being informed and taking necessary precautions in high-risk regions.

According to Bowling, Texas leads in West Nile virus cases, particularly in urban hubs like Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. Awareness and proactive measures are crucial in combating the spread of the virus and protecting public health.

With no specific treatment or vaccine available for the infection, prevention becomes paramount. Bowling recommended practical tips to avoid getting infected, such as wearing long-sleeve clothing, eliminating standing water around households, and using insect repellents containing DEET.

The county’s mosquito abatement strategies include fogging, community outreach, and targeted pesticide spraying to mitigate the mosquito population. Residents can also access information on abatement efforts and West Nile virus updates on Metro Health’s website.

Stay informed, stay safe, and be proactive in protecting yourself and your community from the West Nile virus. Let’s work together to create a healthier environment for all.
