The woman who defeated Coco Gauff: Emma Navarro

Emma Navarro’s Rise to Success at the U.S. Open

Emma Navarro’s impressive 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over defending champion Coco Gauff at the U.S. Open on Sunday secured her spot in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive Grand Slam tournament.

Prior to this year’s appearance in New York, Navarro had never made it past the first round at Flushing Meadows.

During a post-match interview, Navarro stated, “I believe that I can play tennis with the best players in the world. I deserve to be on this stage. I belong in these rounds of Grand Slams. I can make deep runs.”

Who is Emma Navarro?

At 23 years old, Navarro was born in New York and raised in South Carolina. Her father, Ben, is the billionaire founder and CEO of Sherman Financial Group and owns the WTA Tour event in Charleston. Navarro played college tennis at the University of Virginia and won an NCAA singles championship in 2021.

When asked about her progress, Navarro mentioned, “I hope to just keep getting better” as she prepares to face Paula Badosa of Spain in the upcoming match.

Emma Navarro’s Recent Success

Navarro has been climbing the rankings rapidly, reaching a career-best No. 12 spot. She has had a stellar season with a 49-19 record and clinched her first WTA title at Hobart, Australia in January on a hard court, similar to the surface used at the U.S. Open.

Reflecting on her Grand Slam history, Navarro’s breakthrough performance at the U.S. Open marks her eighth major tournament appearance. Her victory over Gauff at Wimbledon and subsequent wins have propelled her to the quarterfinals in both events.

Emma Navarro and Coco Gauff’s Friendship

Despite the intense competition on the court, Navarro and Gauff have a mutual respect for each other. Gauff acknowledged Navarro’s skills, stating, “She’s kind of an all-court player. She can do everything.”

The two athletes were Olympic teammates and share a friendly relationship off the court. They embraced at the net after their U.S. Open match.
