The Rise of Moo Deng: Thailand’s Adorable Baby Hippo
CHONBURI – A month ago, Thailand introduced the world to Moo Deng, the irresistibly cute baby pygmy hippo born at Khao Kheow Open Zoo. Since then, her popularity has skyrocketed, captivating audiences both at home and abroad.
Zookeeper Atthapon Nundee, who has been sharing delightful moments of his animal charges for years, never anticipated the rapid fame that would surround Moo Deng within weeks of her birth.
The sight of cars queuing up outside the zoo hours before opening, visitors flocking from all over to catch a glimpse of the chubby 2-month-old, and the adoring crowd that gathers around her enclosure to watch her antics – Moo Deng has indeed become a sensation.
Moo Deng, which translates to “bouncy pork” in Thai, has garnered a large following both in person and online. Memes, fan art, and even a feature on the social media platform X have only added to her fame.
The zoo has taken steps to protect Moo Deng’s image and prevent commercialization, with plans to release merchandise featuring the lovable hippo to support conservation efforts for endangered species like her.
Moo Deng’s playful nature, captured wonderfully by Atthapon, has endeared her to fans around the world. The zoo now plans to set up a live camera feed for those unable to visit in person.
Despite the positive attention, there have been incidents of mistreatment towards Moo Deng, prompting the zoo to enforce stricter measures to ensure her well-being.
The Khao Kheow Open Zoo, home to over 2,000 animals and a vital breeding ground for endangered species, continues to be a sanctuary for creatures like Moo Deng, bringing joy and awareness to visitors worldwide.
