Zookeeper Atthapon Nundee, who has been sharing delightful moments of his animal charges for years, never anticipated the rapid fame that would surround Moo Deng within weeks of her birth.

The sight of cars queuing up outside the zoo hours before opening, visitors flocking from all over to catch a glimpse of the chubby 2-month-old, and the adoring crowd that gathers around her enclosure to watch her antics – Moo Deng has indeed become a sensation.

Moo Deng, which translates to “bouncy pork” in Thai, has garnered a large following both in person and online. Memes, fan art, and even a feature on the social media platform X have only added to her fame.

The zoo has taken steps to protect Moo Deng’s image and prevent commercialization, with plans to release merchandise featuring the lovable hippo to support conservation efforts for endangered species like her.
