Texas school districts fear funding cuts from state’s student data system upgrades.

School administrators and data specialists across Texas are concerned about the recent upgrades to the system used to collect student, staff, and financial data from school districts. These changes have resulted in thousands of unresolved errors that could potentially impact state funding for schools.

Each of Texas’ 1,200+ school districts must regularly submit data to the state, including information on attendance, enrollment, special education students, and more. This data is crucial for state officials to determine school performance and allocate funding accordingly.

Three years ago, the Texas Education Agency announced significant changes to the reporting system to streamline data sharing and reduce manual labor. While other states have successfully implemented similar upgrades, Texas is the largest to do so.

Despite more than 300 districts participating in the pilot program last year, issues with data accuracy and errors persisted. Schools are now concerned about the impact these errors may have on their funding and accountability ratings.

School administrators, like Lori Rapp of Lewisville ISD, have raised concerns about the lack of time to resolve errors and ensure accurate data submission. The upcoming reporting deadline is causing added pressure for districts to address these issues.

The Texas Tribune’s recent coverage sheds light on the challenges school districts face with the new system. The need for accurate data is paramount, as it directly affects funding and the accountability of schools in the state.

As the transition to the new system progresses, school officials are calling for more time and support to address errors and ensure a smooth data submission process. Districts are hopeful that the Texas Education Agency will work collaboratively to resolve these issues and prevent inaccurate data submissions.

Despite the obstacles faced during the upgrades, districts remain committed to providing accurate student data to meet state requirements and secure necessary funding for their schools.
