SAN ANTONIO – Children in Texas are more likely to be without health insurance than in any other state.
The latest report released by the American Community Survey (ACS), a division of the U.S. Census Bureau, has revealed troubling statistics about uninsured children in Texas. According to the report, almost 12% of children in Texas were uninsured last year, making it the state with the highest uninsured rate for children in the country.
One organization in San Antonio that is working to address this issue is Avenida Guadalupe, a nonprofit that assists low-income families in the city. Gabriel Velasquez, the CEO of Avenida Guadalupe, emphasized the importance of ensuring that children have access to healthcare.
“A healthy child that’s going to school is going to do better,” Velasquez stated. “Our state’s high uninsured rate for children should be a cause for concern for everyone. These children may struggle to access quality education and employment opportunities in the future.”
According to the same study, Arizona ranked second in the nation with almost 9% of children being uninsured last year.
It is imperative that steps are taken to address the issue of uninsured children in Texas and across the country to ensure that all children have access to the healthcare they need for a bright future.
