Texas’ maternal mortality committee is pushing for greater inclusivity and transparency, especially in reviewing abortion-related deaths, highlighted during a recent meeting.

Dr. Carla Ortique, the committee’s chair, called for legislative changes to ensure comprehensive reviews of all maternal deaths, including those related to abortion, pointing out the exclusion of such cases in their files for over a decade.

These demands come as a recent report indicates a troubling rise in maternal deaths in Texas, undoing previous progress and possibly exacerbated by restrictive abortion laws.

ProPublica reported on tragic outcomes in Georgia due to limited access to abortion, reflecting potential risks of similar scenarios in Texas.
