SAN ANTONIO – The legal battle heats up as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton takes on the Bexar County Commissioners Court over a controversial voter registration program. The court voted 3-1 to launch a program that would send voter registration applications to residents, regardless of their eligibility to vote.
Paxton’s lawsuit seeks to stop the program, citing violations of state law. The county plans to use taxpayer funds to hire a third-party vendor to send registration forms to unregistered individuals.
The Attorney General argues that mailing forms to unverified recipients could potentially lead to illegal voter registrations by felons and noncitizens. Paxton’s office asserts that Texas counties lack the authority to print and mail state voter registration forms.
Despite warnings from Paxton, the commissioners proceeded with their plan, prompting the lawsuit seeking an injunction to halt the program’s implementation.
In a statement, Paxton emphasized the illegality of the program, stating, “This program is completely unlawful and potentially invites election fraud. It is a crime to register to vote if you are ineligible.”
