WINDER, Ga. – Over a year ago, Georgia police investigated a 13-year-old boy based on tips regarding online threats of a school shooting. However, due to insufficient evidence, no arrests were made at that time. Tragically, on Wednesday, that same boy opened fire at his high school just outside Atlanta, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and injuring nine others, officials confirmed.
The teen has now been charged as an adult for the deaths of Apalachee High School students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, as well as instructors Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie, according to Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey.
In addition to those who lost their lives, nine others, including eight students and a teacher, were hospitalized with injuries. Thankfully, all were expected to survive, as confirmed by Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith.
The 14-year-old suspect was scheduled to be transferred to a regional youth detention facility on Thursday.
Armed with an assault-style rifle, the teen targeted students in a school hallway after they refused to allow him back into his algebra classroom, as described by classmate Lyela Sayarath.
