Susanna Hernandez: A Beacon of Dedication at Fenwick Academy

The 2024-2025 school year is in full swing, and at KSAT 12, we are thrilled to kick off another round of recognizing outstanding educators in our community with the prestigious “Educator of the Month” award. This September, in partnership with Firstmark Credit Union, we are shining the spotlight on Susanna Hernandez, the head custodian at Fenwick Academy.

Known affectionately as “Ms. Susie” to students and staff, Hernandez’s dedication to the well-being of the school community both on and off campus has not gone unnoticed. As the recipient of this month’s award, she was surprised in the middle of the school day amidst cheers and applause from those whose lives she has touched.

Expressing her gratitude and love for her work, Hernandez’s passion for what she does is evident to everyone around her. Despite only being at Fenwick Academy for a year following the closure of Huppertz Elementary School, her presence has been a source of comfort and familiarity for many students undergoing a significant transition.

Dr. Cassie McClung, the principal of Fenwick Academy, commended Hernandez’s unwavering commitment to creating a clean, welcoming, and nurturing environment for students. Beyond her custodial responsibilities, Hernandez also generously gives her time to coach students in soccer, instilling in them the values of teamwork, discipline, and pride in their school.

Students like Ava Castruita and Joy Zimmerman have benefited from Hernandez’s mentorship and guidance, both on the field and in maintaining a clean school environment. Her small gestures, like rewarding students with snacks for picking up trash, reflect her genuine care and concern for the well-being of those around her.

As Hernandez herself puts it, “I do what I can for these kids. I just want to leave a good impression.” Her impact on the Fenwick Academy community is undeniable, and her story serves as a reminder of the profound influence that educators can have on the lives of their students.

Stay tuned for more inspiring stories like Susanna Hernandez’s as we continue to celebrate the exceptional individuals shaping the future of our community.
