SAN ANTONIO – The courtroom drama unfolds as the punishment phase for a couple involved in a tragic dog attack commences on Monday.
Christian Moreno and Abilene Schnieder, who pleaded guilty to the charge of dangerous dog attack resulting in death in August, are now vying for probation as opposed to the state’s push for a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
The heart-wrenching incident took place on Feb. 24, 2023, when Ramon Najera and his wife were viciously attacked by two out of three loose dogs after exiting their vehicle on Depla Street, located off Highway 90 and Cupples Road.
Tragically, Najera succumbed to his injuries later that day.
In a surprising turn of events, Moreno and Schnieder entered their guilty pleas just as jury selection was set to begin.
The judgment phase will now unfold without a jury, under the guidance of 226th Judge Velia Meza.
Following a week of testimonies, Meza is slated to deliver the sentencing on Sept. 20.
