Stars and fans mark ‘Miami Vice’ TV show’s 40th year in Miami Beach

Welcome to Miami Beach!

Come join us as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic television series, “Miami Vice.” The cast and crew are reuniting to commemorate the show’s premiere on NBC on Sept. 16, 1984. This groundbreaking series, set in the “cocaine cowboy” era of Miami, revolutionized television with its use of pop culture, style, and music.

Former cast members, including Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, are gathering with fans at the Royal Palm South Beach to reminisce about their time on the show. The event has brought together actors such as Edward James Olmos, Michael Madsen, Saundra Santiago, and more.

Edward James Olmos, reflecting on the impact of “Miami Vice,” shared how the show transformed the image of Miami and South Beach, showcasing the beauty of the city and influencing its future development.

The show’s dedication to authenticity, from filming on location in South Florida to its use of contemporary music, set it apart from other series of the time. Songs from popular artists like Phil Collins and Glenn Frey became synonymous with the show’s distinctive style.

As fans gather to celebrate this milestone, they can explore filming locations on bus and walking tours and visit the Miami Vice Museum, featuring never-before-seen memorabilia from the show.

To kick off the festivities, Mayor Steven Meiner declared Sept. 16, 2024, as “Miami Vice Day” in honor of the show’s legacy.
