Bill Land, the iconic voice behind San Antonio Spurs television broadcasts, is bidding farewell to the court ahead of the 2024-2025 NBA season. His distinctive catchphrase “Oh Mama!” has become synonymous with Spurs fandom over the years, and his retirement marks the end of an era for fans.
For more than two decades, Land has been the lead play-by-play announcer for the Spurs, sharing the booth with former Spurs star Sean Elliott. Together, they have witnessed and narrated some of the team’s most memorable moments, including the careers of basketball legends like Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker. Land was also present for the historic Spurs 50th anniversary season and the record-breaking game at the Alamodome in 2023.
Land’s decision to retire comes on the heels of his battle with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer, which was diagnosed in 2023. Despite the challenges he faced, Land expressed gratitude for the unwavering support he received from the Spurs organization, FOX Sports/Bally Sports, his colleagues, and the loyal Spurs fanbase.
Reflecting on his tenure, Land said, “I feel truly blessed to have had a dream job with the best production crew in the league and the best analyst in the NBA, Sean Elliott. As I transition into this new chapter of my life, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone, especially Spurs fans, for their incredible support throughout my career, especially during my battle with cancer.”
Land’s broadcasting journey with the Spurs began in 1990 as an occasional fill-in announcer and progressed to a prominent role in 2003, eventually leading to his position as the lead play-by-play announcer in 2008. His distinctive voice and infectious passion for the game endeared him to Spurs fans, making him a beloved figure in the team’s history.
Mike Kickirillo, Senior Director of Broadcasting for Spurs Sports & Entertainment, praised Land’s contributions, stating, “Bill has been a core member of the Spurs family, bringing joy and passion to our games for over 20 years. His iconic voice and character have solidified his place among our beloved Spurs legends, and his absence will be deeply felt. We are immensely grateful for his dedication to the team and fans.”
Following a stem cell transplant in June 2024, Land plans to remain in the San Antonio area with his family and focus on his health and well-being. The Spurs will honor him at their home opener against the Houston Rockets on Saturday, October 26, as a tribute to his remarkable career.
As the Spurs prepare for the upcoming season, details about the 2024-25 broadcast team will be announced in due course, ensuring that fans continue to enjoy world-class coverage of their favorite team.
