Southwest Airlines skeptical of long-term agreement with San Antonio due to growth concerns

San Antonio – City Council approved an airline operating agreement and terminal leases, but Southwest Airlines voiced its disapproval of the terms.

Chris Perry, a spokesperson for Southwest, expressed concern over the newly passed items, stating that their future growth plans could be at risk. He mentioned that the airline had been assured by airport officials that they would expand to 10 gates at the new Terminal C, set to open in 2028. Consequently, Southwest had committed $200 million for enhancements to the six gates in Terminal A, a move Perry called inadequate for their needs.

Despite earlier assurances, Perry revealed that in June, the airport reconsidered their commitment, leaving Southwest uncertain about their future plans.

Perry clarified, saying, “We have plans for future growth at SAT, but will be forced to reassess those plans without a concrete, viable option from the city to solve the capacity constraint problems.”

Perry affirmed that despite the disagreement, Southwest is committed to finding a resolution with the airport. He emphasized Southwest’s significant market share at the airport and their commitment to serving San Antonians.

Southwest aims to work with the airport and the city to address capacity constraints and provide a seamless experience for travelers. They are advocating for a solution that accommodates their growing number of passengers and aligns with the airport’s goals.

We have reached out to the City of San Antonio and airport officials for comment and are awaiting a response.
