Selena, Freddy Fender Songs Nominated for Library of Congress

Music has the power to connect us to our culture, history, and emotions. It tells stories, evokes memories, and brings communities together. Recognizing the importance of preserving Latino voices in music, US Rep. Joaquin Castro of San Antonio has released his annual nomination list for the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress.

This year’s list includes iconic songs, sounds, and albums by legendary artists such as Selena, Freddy Fender, Vicente Fernández, Gloria Estefan, Linda Ronstadt, and many more. These nominations represent a diverse range of music genres and generations, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of Latino music.

In addition to honoring individual artists, Castro’s nomination list includes a radio recording to commemorate the first full-time Spanish-language radio broadcast in the US, which aired in San Antonio in 1946. This nod to historical significance underscores the importance of recognizing the contributions of Latino voices in shaping the music landscape.

The diverse selection of nominations for 2024 includes classic tracks such as “Amor Prohibido” by Selena, “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” by Freddy Fender, “Volver, Volver” by Vicente Fernández, and more. These timeless songs have left an indelible mark on the music industry and continue to resonate with audiences across generations.

Since Castro began submitting nomination lists in 2022, several of his nominated artists have been inducted into the National Recording Registry, including Juan Gabriel, Héctor Lavoe, Irene Cara, and Daddy Yankee. These milestones highlight the cultural significance and lasting impact of Latino music in American history.

As we celebrate the diversity and richness of Latino music, it is essential to preserve these cultural treasures for future generations. The National Recording Registry serves as a vital platform for recognizing and honoring the contributions of Latino voices in the music industry.

The Library of Congress will continue to accept public nominations for the 2025 registry, inviting music enthusiasts to participate in preserving the legacy of Latino music. Let’s come together to celebrate and preserve the vibrant tapestry of Latino voices that have shaped our musical heritage.
