The Tragic Story of a Hit-and-Run Crash on San Antonio’s West Side
The family of a man who tragically died earlier this month as a result of a hit-and-run crash on San Antonio’s West Side is dealing with its second tragedy in three months.
Samuel Arellano passed away three days after the August 30 crash on Historic Old U.S. Highway 90 near South San Joaquin Street. He was riding his bicycle across the road when he was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.
Crime Stoppers has released a photo of the pickup involved in the hopes of finding the driver responsible for this heartbreaking incident.
“He was the only father I’ve ever had,” shared John Alderete, speaking about Arellano. “He was a good-hearted man, but he was also a hard man, old school. He was real old school.”
Even though Arellano was technically his stepfather, Alderete explained that he played a significant role in raising him. The fact that the driver did not stop after hitting him has been particularly difficult for the family to comprehend.
“Didn’t even consider what he was doing,” Alderete expressed. “Really? You couldn’t have stopped or at least called an ambulance?”
The entire family is struggling to come to terms with the loss of Arellano. Just two months prior to this tragic incident, Alderete’s brother, Roy, was killed in another crash that was also covered by KSAT 12 News.
In that previous incident, Roy Aldrete was an innocent bystander who was struck by a car during a rolling gun battle. The car lost control, veered off the road, and hit Roy as he was sitting in a ditch.
Both the June 18 crash and the one that claimed Arellano’s life are under active police investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at (210) 224-STOP (7867).
