NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – A recent incident involving a San Antonio police officer has caused quite a stir. Officer John Sylvester was suspended for 45 days last month after an internal investigation found that he threw a woman on the ground and pinned her down for 10 minutes during a domestic dispute earlier this year.
The incident, which occurred on March 4 outside Sylvester’s New Braunfels residence, raised serious questions about his conduct. Sylvester, who was off duty at the time, put on his handgun and SAPD badge and tried to prevent the woman from leaving the home.
The situation escalated as Sylvester forcibly removed the woman’s phone and purse from the vehicle. He then attempted to pull her from the vehicle, leading to a physical altercation where he ultimately threw her to the ground and pinned her down for an extended period.
An investigation into the incident revealed that the woman suffered severe back pain, as well as bruising and scratches to her arms, legs, and neck as a result of Sylvester’s actions. Despite this, Sylvester was not charged at the scene.
The case was later forwarded to the Guadalupe County District Attorney’s Office for further review, but charges were not pursued. Sylvester ultimately received a 45-day suspension from the police department after a meeting with SAPD Chief William McManus.
It is concerning to see such behavior from a law enforcement officer, especially someone who is meant to uphold the law and protect the community. Sylvester’s actions have rightfully raised questions about his fitness for duty and the standards of conduct expected of police officers.
