San Antonio Police Officers Fatally Shoot Suspect and Critically Injure Another Man
San Antonio police disclosed on Sunday that three of its officers were involved in a shooting incident resulting in the death of a suspect and critical injury to another man.
The incident took place around 5:45 p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of Broadway Street near Brooklyn Avenue.
The suspect, identified as a 22-year-old man, was wanted on three felony warrants, including possessing a firearm, continuous violence against the family, and aggravated promotion of prostitution.
Another 22-year-old man, who was not described as a suspect by officers, was also hit by the gunfire and rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
Details about the number of shots fired by the officers at the suspect and the other man remain unclear.
San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus stated that the department’s ROPE Unit and Crisis Response Team detectives had been monitoring the suspect since Friday.
During a news conference on Saturday, McManus reported that as officers attempted to remove the suspect from a vehicle, he resisted and made threatening statements about having a gun.
When the suspect started rummaging through a backpack inside the vehicle, the officers opened fire, resulting in the suspect’s death at the scene.
All three officers involved in the shooting have at least seven years of experience within the department and have been placed on administrative duty while investigations are ongoing.
SAPD’s Shooting Team and Internal Affairs Unit will conduct separate investigations and provide their findings to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office for an independent review.
