Woodlawn Lake Park in San Antonio is about to undergo an impressive transformation thanks to a generous $3.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior. This investment is a significant step towards revitalizing one of San Antonio’s most beloved yet underfunded parks.
Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito of District 7 shared the exciting news, emphasizing the importance of preserving and enhancing this community space for all to enjoy. With this funding, Woodlawn Lake Park will see several improvements, including the addition of a splashpad for year-round use, 475 new trees as part of the Tree Master Plan, terraced seating along the shore, accessible nodes for fishing and educational modules, and rain gardens to improve water quality.
Gavito expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunity to enhance a vital gathering place for the community, acknowledging the challenges the park has faced due to limited funding. This grant not only provides financial support but also underscores the city’s commitment to preserving natural spaces and creating safe, engaging environments for residents.
The grant awarded to the City of San Antonio for Woodlawn Lake Park is the largest in the city’s history, part of 54 grants distributed nationwide. Combined with resources from the city’s fiscal year 2022 bond, the total investment in the park now stands at an impressive $6.5 million.
This achievement was made possible through a collaborative effort between Gavito, the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, the San Antonio River Authority, the National Park Service, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, as well as local and federal leaders who worked together to secure the grant.
Woodlawn Lake Park is on its way to becoming an even more vibrant and accessible space for families and nature lovers alike, thanks to this significant investment. Stay tuned for exciting updates as the park undergoes its transformation!
