SAN ANTONIO – Working as a medical assistant at a gastroenterology clinic has been a fulfilling experience for April Tellez. Little did she know that she would soon be facing her own health battle.
Earlier this year, Tellez was diagnosed with a rare form of skin cancer known as Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP). Since then, she has undergone multiple surgeries at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, accumulating significant medical bills in the process.
Luckily, Tellez’s friend Lauren Suniga stepped in to help. Suniga rallied friends and family in the community for support and eventually connected with Marc Mendiola, who organized the Make it Count Market to raise funds for Tellez’s treatment.
The event featured vendors, food, music, exercise, and giveaways, all held at Burgerteca in San Antonio. Tellez expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of support and emphasized the importance of advocating for one’s own medical care, especially for cancer patients.
As Tellez shares her journey, she hopes to inspire others facing similar challenges to take control of their health decisions and remain resilient in the face of adversity.
Events like the Make it Count Market serve as a reminder of the power of community and collective support in times of need. Tellez encourages others to seize opportunities for assistance and embrace the journey toward healing and recovery.
