The United Way of San Antonio Keeps Vulnerable Populations Cool in the Summer Heat
As the hot weather persists, it can be especially dangerous for seniors and individuals with disabilities who may struggle to keep their homes cool. Recognizing this need, the United Way of San Antonio has stepped in to ensure these vulnerable populations stay comfortable.
The United Way of San Antonio provides free box fans to individuals in need throughout the community, all thanks to their 211 Call Center. This call center serves as a vital resource for those seeking referrals and information on community resources, and it is funded by the United Way and the State of Texas.
Having been in operation for over 20 years, the 211 Call Center assists community members in accessing a range of resources, from utility assistance to mental health services, and much more.
Each summer, the United Way also runs its Project Cool initiative, where donated box fans are distributed to local fire stations. These fans are then provided to individuals in need through Catholic Charities, which works closely with the 211 Call Center.
Jaqueline Gutierrez, database manager & analyst for United Way San Antonio, emphasizes the importance of this program, stating, “It helps alleviate the heat for those populations that are often on fixed incomes and struggle to afford high utility bills during heat waves.”
To qualify for a fan, individuals must be at least 55 years of age or older or have a disability. When calling 211, individuals will be asked about their specific needs and their ZIP code to determine the nearest distribution location.
Last year, the United Way distributed about 3,800 fans to those in need, and this year, they’ve already surpassed 4,000 fans. The initiative runs through the end of September to ensure vulnerable populations can stay cool during the hottest months.
