Sam Schmidt, paralyzed in a racing accident nearly 25 years ago, has been on a mission to show that life can still be meaningful despite a traumatic spinal cord injury. His journey began in 2000 when he suffered a severe spinal cord injury after crashing at Walt Disney World Speedway.
Initial prognosis was grim, with doctors predicting a life on a ventilator in a nursing home. Drawing inspiration from Christopher Reeve, Schmidt underwent surgery that ultimately saved him from a lifetime on the ventilator.
Following his recovery, Schmidt dedicated himself to helping others in similar situations. He founded the Driven NeuroRecovery Center in Las Vegas and later partnered with NeuroHope to establish a not-for-profit center in Indianapolis focused on rehabilitation for spinal cord injuries and other neurological disorders.
Driven offers holistic care and rehabilitation services for various neuro-disabilities, including strokes, brain injuries, and Parkinson’s disease. The center is equipped with specialized facilities such as aquatic pools, rehab equipment, and adaptive sports facilities.
To enhance the patient experience, discounted accommodations have been arranged with a nearby hotel. The center also provides mental health services, K9 companions, financial aid, and education on adapting to a new lifestyle.
Sam Schmidt’s tireless efforts to support and empower individuals with similar injuries demonstrate his unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on the community. By providing comprehensive resources and fostering a supportive environment, he is helping others find new passions and achieve a fulfilling life despite their challenges.
