Addressing School Heating and A/C Issues: SAISD’s Plan for 2023-24 School Year
As students gear up to return to school for the 2023-24 academic year, the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) is taking proactive measures to prevent the disruption of classes due to heating and air conditioning issues.
In a recent letter to parents and guardians, Superintendent Jaime Aquino outlined the operating procedures that will be implemented in case of extreme weather conditions impacting classroom temperatures. According to Aquino, custodians will begin checking classroom temperatures as early as 5 a.m., ensuring that any potential issues are promptly addressed before students and staff arrive for the school day.
In the event that temperatures fall outside the normal range of 72 to 76 degrees, the district will take immediate action. This may include using portable air-conditioning units, relocating students to other areas of the campus if necessary, or as a last resort, moving students to another campus. Parents will be notified in advance in such cases and will have the option to pick up their child.

“We want you to know that while your children are in our care, they will be receiving instruction and kept safe and comfortable,” Aquino assured parents. He also mentioned that the district is planning bond projects to bring facilities up to current industry standards, with an estimated cost of $575 million.
At the end of the previous school year, Aquino promised contingency plans to address HVAC issues, following multiple school closures due to heating and cooling failures. The district acknowledged that underfunding and the age of its buildings were contributing factors to the breakdown of HVAC systems.
