The Detroit Red Wings are Investing in a Bright Future with Moritz Seider
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings made another significant investment this week by signing Moritz Seider to a lucrative seven-year contract worth nearly $60 million. This move follows the recent eight-year deal signed with 22-year-old forward Lucas Raymond, showcasing the team’s commitment to building a strong foundation for the future.
Detroit drafted Seider with the No. 6 overall pick eight years ago, and he has since proven to be an exceptional talent. With 134 career points, Seider holds the record for the most points by a defenseman drafted in 2019.
During the last season, Seider set himself apart as the NHL’s only player to achieve both 200 hits and block 200-plus shots. He scored nine goals, tallying a total of 42 points for the second consecutive year.
Seider’s outstanding performance earned him the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie in 2022, where he reached a career-high of 50 points.
General manager Steve Yzerman is placing his trust in Seider and Raymond to help transition the Red Wings from a rebuilding phase to a winning team. Detroit has endured eight consecutive seasons without making the playoffs, marking the longest postseason drought in franchise history.
Having won four Stanley Cups between 1997 and 2008, the Red Wings have been striving to recapture past glory since their record run of 25 straight postseason appearances ended in 2016. Last season, the team posted a record of 41-32-9, achieving a winning record for the first time since their last playoff appearance.
Yzerman’s strategic moves, including re-signing Patrick Kane and signing free agents like Vladimir Tarasenko, reflect the team’s commitment to success. Tarasenko, fresh off a Stanley Cup victory with the Florida Panthers, signed a two-year contract worth $9.5 million.
