Have you ever seen the signs on Highway 90 in San Antonio directing you to exit at General Hudnell Drive and Port San Antonio? Most people pass by without a second glance, but in this story, we’re diving deeper.

Port San Antonio, formerly known as Kelly Air Force Base, has a rich history that dates back to the early 1900s when San Antonio established itself as Military City, USA. Military aviation played a significant role in bringing military bases to the area, shaping the city’s identity.

Roots of Kelly Air Force Base

In 1910, Lt. Benjamin Foulois arrived at Fort Sam Houston with the U.S. Army’s only airplane, setting in motion a series of events that led to the establishment of Kelly Air Force Base in November 1916.

Over the years, Kelly AFB became a crucial hub for training military pilots, playing key roles in major conflicts like World Wars, the Korean War, and Vietnam. It later evolved into a center for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of military aircraft, becoming the largest employer in San Antonio in the 1990s.

In 1995, a base realignment and closure initiative led to the transformation of Kelly AFB into Kelly USA under the Greater Kelly Development Corporation. The new mission focused on maintaining San Antonio’s military workforce while embracing a new vision for the site.

Renamed Port San Antonio in 2007, the facility shifted its emphasis to technology, innovation, and education, providing a home for diverse companies in the private and public sectors. Today, Port SA is a leading hub for cybersecurity, information technology, aviation, and critical infrastructure.

With over 80 companies operating at Port San Antonio, businesses are drawn to the area for its cutting-edge facilities, skilled workforce, and strong community connections. Boeing, the world’s largest MRO operator, runs a significant operation at Port SA, leveraging its state-of-the-art facilities and resources.

The Future of Port San Antonio

Looking ahead, Port SA is poised for further growth and innovation, with projects like the Tech Port Arena and partnerships with organizations like NASA driving technology development and education. Future plans include a biodome for research and a vertiport for electric aircraft, showcasing the site’s commitment to technological advancement and sustainability.
