The Rise of Esports in Schools: A New Frontier for Students
As the new school year kicks off, students across the country are gearing up for traditional extracurricular activities like football games, band performances, and debate competitions. However, one area that is rapidly gaining popularity in schools is esports.
Pieper High School is one of the schools at the forefront of this trend, experiencing a surge in interest among students. Sam Pippert, who started the esports program at Smithson Valley High School before moving to Pieper, has witnessed this growth firsthand.
According to Pippert, the esports program at Pieper began in 2020 as a response to the limitations on traditional sports imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, esports programs have popped up at all the high schools in the Comal Independent School District. This summer, the district was recognized as the first School District of the Year by PlayVS, an organization that hosts esports events nationwide.
Pippert highlights the inclusive nature of esports, noting that it appeals to a wide range of students, regardless of their interests or backgrounds. He emphasizes the importance of creating a welcoming and supportive community for all participants.
Students echo this sentiment, sharing how esports has helped them socially and emotionally. By fostering teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills, esports provides a platform for personal growth and development outside of the traditional classroom setting.
For Pieper High School junior Cameron Harvell, esports has not only expanded his social circle but also helped him navigate social situations with greater ease. The sense of camaraderie and shared passion for gaming has enriched his high school experience.
Ultimately, Pippert emphasizes that esports is about more than just competition—it’s about building connections and fostering a sense of community among students. By providing a space for students to collaborate, communicate, and support one another, esports offers a unique opportunity for personal and social development.
As the esports scene continues to grow in schools across the country, it’s clear that this emerging field is more than just a game—it’s a gateway to new possibilities and connections for students of all backgrounds.
