Paxton fights Bexar voter program in court spotlight

SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County and the Texas Attorney General’s Office are set to go head-to-head in court on Monday in a hearing regarding a voter registration program.

Attorney General Ken Paxton has requested a temporary restraining order and temporary injunction to halt a mail voter registration form program, and both sides will present oral arguments on the matter.

A judge will decide whether to issue a ruling immediately after the arguments or at a later date.

The Bexar County Commissioners Court approved a contract with Civic Government Solution on Sept. 3 to assist with a targeted voter registration outreach for residents who may have changed addresses or recently moved.

Shortly after the contract was approved, the AG’s Office filed a lawsuit to stop the enforcement of the contract.

In a letter to commissioners, Paxton warned that the deal was illegal as Texas law does not explicitly permit counties to mail out unsolicited registration forms without a grant of legal authority.

Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales is committed to protecting voters’ rights and resisting any attempts to undermine the democratic process.

Gonzales stated, “This is a crucial national issue regarding safeguarding the right to vote in our community. We stand ready to defend the decision made by the Bexar County Commissioners Court to encourage citizens to exercise their constitutional right to elect their leaders. We will continue to uphold democracy and oppose Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s efforts to instill doubt in our democratic process.”

The hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Monday at Bexar County Civil District Presiding Court.
