After nine years at the helm, Rutgers University Athletic Director Pat Hobbs has announced his resignation due to health reasons. His departure comes just as the Scarlet Knights gear up for an exciting football season, with Deputy Athletic Director Ryan Pisarri stepping in as interim AD.
In a heartfelt email to university president Jonathan Holloway, Hobbs explained, “After meeting with my cardiac team this week and having just been apprised of the results of my latest round of testing, it is clear that I cannot continue to serve as Athletic Director given the requirements of the position.”
Hobbs joined Rutgers in 2015, shortly after the school joined the Big Ten conference. Throughout his tenure, he has overseen significant successes in both men’s and women’s sports. Hobbs expressed pride in the accomplishments of the athletic programs under his leadership, noting the unprecedented success across various sports.
Under Hobbs’ guidance, Rutgers saw remarkable achievements such as the resurgence of the men’s basketball program under coach Steve Pikiell, the return of Greg Schiano as football coach, and the hiring of Coquese Washington to lead the women’s basketball team. Facilities projects, including a new football practice facility, also marked Hobbs’ tenure.
Despite some challenges, including controversies in the softball program, Rutgers experienced unprecedented athletic success in recent years. Hobbs remained passionate about the future of Rutgers athletics, expressing his desire to witness further achievements in football, basketball, and other sports.
The legacy of Pat Hobbs at Rutgers is one of progress, achievement, and dedication to the student-athletes of the university. As a new chapter begins for Rutgers Athletics, the impact of Hobbs’ leadership will continue to be felt for years to come.
