In a shocking turn of events, a bleacher collapse at the Labor Day Kendall County Rodeo left a dozen people injured just a day after inspectors found no violations on the fairgrounds. This incident has highlighted the importance of thorough inspections and safety protocols at public events.
According to records obtained by KSAT Investigates, three inspectors conducted a general inspection of the fairgrounds on August 30, 2024, in preparation for the Labor Day fair. Despite the absence of fire hazards and the presence of up-to-date extinguishers, the bleachers were not specifically mentioned in the inspection report.
The aftermath of the collapse was captured in harrowing images showing the metal structure buckling under the weight of the spectators. Trash littered the area where the incident occurred, serving as a stark reminder of the chaos and confusion that ensued.
Following the incident, the Boerne Fire Department reported that eight people, ranging from 7 to 79 years old, were taken to the hospital. As of Tuesday, only one person remained hospitalized. In response to the collapse, the Boerne Fire Marshal’s Office and the city’s Permitting and Code Compliance Office conducted a thorough inspection of the grounds surrounding the rodeo arena.
Moving forward, both agencies have determined that a structural engineer must assess the arena’s safety before it can be reopened to the public. Chris Shadrock, communications director for the City of Boerne, emphasized the city’s commitment to providing timely updates on the situation.
As investigations continue to unfold, it is crucial to prioritize safety measures and adhere to strict inspection protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
